Hospital Princess
After a stressful morning, we got the good news that the MRI showed nothing wrong with my daughter’s brain or optic nerve but the news came with another piece of unwelcome information. She was to have a lumbar puncture to rule out a viral or bacterial infection causing an inflammation near her optic nerve. The doctor explained that the trauma could have been coincidental to an infection and they needed to rule it out before they started treatment to reduce the swelling.Â
So, she spent another long morning and lunch hour without food or fluids, endured an EEG and suffered through another blood-letting that was made more difficult by her enforced starvation (she’s become rather dehydrated and her IV was drying out.) Then, immediately after, she was separated from me and spent another 15-20 minutes getting her back poked. She was led out to me and immediately collapsed into my arms. She looked so sick and small. I carried her to her bed and she complained that she was cold, tired, hungry, thirsty and nauseated.
Then, miracle of miracles, she got her lunch, gobbled it up and announced, “This is the life!” Of course, I’d just finished telling her that, aside from 3 days of steroids in her IV, she should be done with all the interference. She’s thrilled to have her meals in bed, TV whenever she likes and a roommate ready to play games all day long. She even said that the MRI wasn’t bad because she couldn’t hear her brother bugging her. Oh my!
Now, we just wait to see if the steroids do their job and she gets her vision back to normal. You know, the thing that started this whole thing to begin with.
