Father

May 5th, 2008
There’s something like a line of gold thread running through a man’s words when he talks to his daughter, and gradually over the years it gets to be long enough for you to pick up in your hands and weave into a cloth that feels like love itself.
~John Gregory Brown

One good father can do more than 100 schoolmasters.
~ Persian Proverb

A Daddy is a man who has photos
in his wallet where his money
used to be.

A father is someone we can look up to no matter how tall we get.

The most important thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother.

When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years.
~ Mark Twain

Some may own castles
on the banks of the Rhine,
and hire orchestras
each morning at nine.
But richer than I
they will never be…
I had a dad
who spent time with me.
~ D. Morgan

My Dad
by Hazel Fletcher Young

I love someone dearly.
He’s kind as can be;
He makes me so happy;
He’s my dad, you see.

He takes me out fishing;
We play ball and swim;
He knows about everything:
I’m so proud of him.

And as I get bigger,
I just want to grow
To be like my daddy,
‘Cause I love him so.

Daddy’s Steps
by Margaret Brown Elms
When Daddy walks along the street
And hurries home to me,
He takes the quickest, longest steps
That ever I did see.
But when I go to walk with him,
He acts quite diff’rently,
And takes the slowest, shortest ones
To keep in step with me.

It is much easier to become a father than to be one.
~ Kent Nerburn

There are two lasting bequests we can give our children. One is roots. The other is wings.
~ Hodding Carter, Jr.

The father who would taste the essence of his fatherhood must turn back from the plane of his experience, take with him the fruits of his journey and begin again beside his child, marching step by step over the same old road.
~ Angelo Patri

Never raise your hand to your kids.  It leaves your groin unprotected.
~ Red Buttons

The guys who fear becoming fathers don’t understand that fathering is not something perfect men do, but something that perfects the man. The end product of child raising is not the child but the parent.
~ Frank Pittman

Build me a son, O Lord, who will be strong enough to know when he is weak, and brave
enough to face himself when he is afraid. One who will be proud and unbending in defeat but humble and gentle in victory.
A son whose wishbone will not be where his backbone should be; a son who will know that to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge.

Rear him, I pray, not in the paths of ease and comfort but under the stress and spur of
difficulties and challenges. Here let him learn to stand up in the storm; here let him learn compassion for those who fail.

Build me a son whose heart will be clean, whose goal will be high. A son who will master himself before he seeks to master other men. One who learns to laugh, yet never forget how to weep. One who will reach into the future yet never forget the past.

And after all these are his, add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor so that he may always be
serious, yet never take himself too seriously: a touch of humility, so that he may always
remember the simplicity of true greatness; the open mind of true wisdom; the meekness of
true strength.

Then, I, his father, will dare to whisper, “I have not lived in vain.”
~ General Douglas McArthur

What Makes A Dad

God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of ages,
The power of the eagles flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
And then there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so, He called it-Dad.

When you are a father, and you hear
your children’s voices, you will feel that
those little ones are akin to every drop in
your veins; that they are the very flower of
your life and you will cleave so closely to
them that you seem to feel every movement
that they make.
~ Honore De Balzac

A father is a person that is forced to endure childbirth without an anesthetic
A father is a person that growls when he feels good . . . and laughs out loud when scared half to death
A father never feels worthy of the worship in a child’s eyes.
He’s never quite the hero his daughter thinks . . . never quite the man his son believes him to be . . . and this worries him
So he works too hard to try and smooth the rough places in the road for those of his own who will follow him
A father is a person who gets angry when the first school grades aren’t as good as he thinks they should be
He scolds his son . . . though he knows it’s the teacher’s fault
Fathers are persons that give daughters away to other men who aren’t nearly good enough . . .
so they can have grandchildren who are smarter than anybody’s.
~ Paul Harvey
