Milestones

There is a good reason they call these ceremonies “commencement exercises.” Graduation is not the end; it’s the beginning.
~ Orrin Hatch

The soul is dyed the color of its thoughts. Think only on those things that are in line with your principles and can bear the full light of day. The content of your character is your choice. Day by day, what you choose, what you think, and what you do is who you become. Your integrity is your destiny…it is the light that guides your way.
Heraclitus, Greek Poet, Philosopher

Success
by Ralph Waldo Emerson

To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty,
to find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better,
whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived;
This is to have succeeded.

OH! THE PLACES YOU’LL GO
by
Dr. Seuss
(condensed)
Congratulations!
Today is your day.
You’re off to Great Places!
You’re off and away!
You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself
any direction you choose.
You’re on your own.
And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go.
You’ll look up and down streets. Look ‘em over with care.
About some you will say, “I don’t choose to go there.”
With your head full of brains and your shoes full of feet,
You’re too smart to go down any not-so-good street.
OH! THE PLACES YOU’LL GO You’ll be on your way up!
You’ll be seeing great sights!
You’ll join the high fliers.
who soar to high heights.
You won’t lag behind, because you’ll have the speed.
You’ll pass the whole gang and you’ll soon take the lead.
Whenever you fly, you’ll be best of the best.
Wherever you go, you will top all the rest.
Oh, the places you’ll go! There is fun to be done!
There are points to be scored. There are games o be won.
And the magical things you can do with that ball
will make you the winning-est winner of all.
Fame! You’ll be famous as famous can be,
with the whole wide world watching you win on TV.
And will you succeed?
Yes! You will, indeed!
(98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.)
KID, YOU’LL MOVE MOUNTAINS! So….
be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray
or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O’Shea,
you’re off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So… get on your way!

The aim of education should be to teach us rather how to think, than what to think - rather to improve our minds, so as to enable us to think for ourselves, than to load the memory with thoughts of other men.
~Bill Beattie

The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows.
~Sydney J. Harris

Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school.
~Albert Einstein

Do not go where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. |
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

This is the day your future begins.

The Road Not Taken
by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could.
To where it bent in the undergrowth,
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I –
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.
~ Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

Dreams
by Langston Hughes

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken winged bird
Afraid to fly
Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams go
Life is a barren hill
covered with snow.

Graduation (lyrics)
by Vitamin C

Will we think about tomorrow like we think about now?
Can we survive it out there?
Can we make it somehow?
I guess I thought that this would never end
And suddenly it’s like we’re women and men
Will the past be a shadow that will follow us ’round?
Will these memories fade when I leave this town?
I keep, I keep thinking that it’s not goodbye
Keep on thinking it’s a time to fly
As we go on
We remember
All the times we
Had together
And as our lives change
Come whatever
We will still be
Friends Forever

When buying a used car, punch the buttons on the radio.  If all the stations are rock and roll, there’s a good chance the transmission is shot.
~ Larry Lujack

The school is the last expenditure upon which America should be willing to economize.
~Franklin D. Roosevelt

It’ll be a great day when education gets all the money it wants and the Air Force has to hold a bake sale to buy bombers.
